Follow Arabella Greenhill’s perfect party wear tips to be Belle of the Ball this New Year’s Eve.

As Fashion Director at Instyle UK, I’ve seen some truly fantastic party wear in my time. And this year is no different.
From head to toe sparkle and ‘the new LBD’, to beaded velvet, glittering crystals or disco metallic – you can afford to be bold this New Year’s Eve as glamour makes a comeback.

Here’s my list of the best party wear talking points to try out as we say goodbye to 2016…

Trouser suit
This look is back in business but colour is what’s important here. Ditch the black and play with colours, prints and proportions. Whether it's a shiny suit or pyjama style velvet, a two piece is the way to go.

1980s Cocktail Dressing
Power dressing is back, but predominantly focused on eveningwear: spiked stilettos are in, as is satin, ruching, oodles of gold jewellery, fishnet tights and asymmetric cuts. Leather and lace, latex and lurex - no after-dark outfit detail is left unadorned or devoid of shimmer. Go for a one-shouldered top paired with an oversized tassel earring for a bold ‘night out’ outfit.

Spice up your go-to party look by trying a little black dress that has some flair. Whether it’s a bedazzled high-slit dress, something tulle and sequin-embellished, or cut-out shoulders - go for an LBD that brings something a little different to the table. Elevate it with a pair of ultra sexy heels.

It’s taken centre stage this season as THE fabric of the season but a jewel colour will really make you stand out from the crowd. Take the festive route by opting for a deep red or dark green.

This is a look that reappears every Christmas, but sequins are everywhere this season. All self-respecting party girls will be decked out in the shimmering material, but make heads turn with a colour sequin. If you invest in one party piece this season, make it a statement sequin dress.

All that glitters
If you’re looking for an alternative LBD this season, go for a LMD – that's Little Metallic Dress. Maximalism equals shine, so go for the magpie approach. Anything sparkly is fair game. Just don't mix it with big jewels or encrusted shoes. Opt for patent sandals or satin point.

And what about those all-important accessories? What’s more decadent than a jewelled shoe. Sequined, feathered and encrusted, these trophy shoes mean you can be lazy with everything else because they need no more than the simplest of outfits be paired with.

If a shiny outfit isn’t your thing, keep it to an accessory.  A metallic shoe or bag is a simple way to add some shimmer and shine to your outfit.

And don’t forget your earring bling. Keep it long and dangly and stick to one ear only.

Make sure you don’t lug your workbag to the party. A teeny cross-body bag (on a delicate chain strap) is all you need.

Now you know how to look out for that standout, statement or sizzling outfit. The witching hour has never looked more refined.
