Mental Health Awareness Week

As part of our support for Mental Health Awareness Week, Manchester Arndale is running a special event this weekend to help shoppers discover gentle and easy ways to relax.


On Saturday 19 May, Exchange Court will be transformed into The Breathing Space – a breakout area offering a range of 20 minute sessions throughout the day. With experts citing exercise as a fantastic way to boost self-esteem and help you concentrate, sleep and feel better[1], the event includes bitesize Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi classes for beginners – with trained instructors giving a flavour of each practice before you try at home or find a class in your local area.
 
For those wanting to have a go at something a little different, the event will also feature two Laughter Yoga sessions led by local coach Robin Graham. Laughter yoga is based on the belief that voluntary laughter provides the same benefits to the body as spontaneous laughter, as well as bringing communities and individuals together socially.
In addition, experts from Lush will also be on hand to offer hand massages and advice on holistic ways to relax.
 
Shoppers taking part in the event will be asked to give a minimum £1 donation which will be given to Manchester Arndale’s current charity star, Moodswings. Moodswings is an award-winning Manchester based mental health charity. Founded in 1999, Moodswings works to help people recover from mood problems and the severe emotional distress they can cause. From its centre in Manchester, the Moodswings team reaches out across the North West and beyond to support individuals on a one-to-one basis, as well as their families and friends. As part of its programme, the charity also offers a range of social classes including fitness, drama and craft, to help people relax and become more mindful about their feelings and tensions on a day-to-day basis.
 
Pop down to Exchange Court (outside Next) between 11am and 5pm on Saturday 19 May. The timetable of sessions is as follows:
