Chinese New Year 2018

Celebrate Chinese New Year with a weekend packed full of fun and fortune on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 February. Featuring: thousands of red lanterns, food, fireworks, a funfair and the legendary Dragon Parade. Plus traditional lion dancing, martial arts and crafts, red envelope giveaways and VIP shopping events.

Once again, Manchester Arndale will be transformed into a hive of creative workshops for families on the lower mall outside Next.

Saturday 17 February
The Confucius Institute will be part of Manchester's Chinese New Year celebrations.  Our teachers from China will spend the day introducing children and their parents to Chinese cultural activities, like Chinese knot making and Calligraphy. Come and explore these traditional arts and use the newly learnt skills to make your own bracelet or badges.

Children will be able to choose a specific Chinese character and the teacher will demonstrate how one draws the character on the special paper using a brush and ink. They can then turn that piece of personalised art into a pin badge. Alternatively, children can try their hand on traditional knot making and create their own knotted bracelet decorated with an animal charm to welcome the Year of the Dog.

Sunday 18 February
Over the Chinese New Year weekend the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Art will be running free block printing workshops, suitable for all ages. Learn a traditional Chinese technique, which can be re-created at home using household objects. The workshops are taking place here Sunday 18 February from 11am to 4pm. Booking is not required, and anyone can join in.

Find out what's on for 2018 the year of The Dog.
