AW16 Trends: New season, new you

by Manchester Arndale, 13th September 2016 | Students, Fashion

AW16: Trends you just HAVE to pull off this season

Autumn is here and that can only mean one thing…time to update our wardrobe!
Who cares if it’s cold and wet outside when you’re covered up in a brand new faux fur coat, right?

Here are our favourite catwalk trends to find on the high street this year.

Moreish Metallics

Wardrobes were awash with metallic influences in spring/summer this year and the trend shows no sign of slowing down. Set to shine bright this season, metallic fashion is perfect party wear and comes in all shapes and sizes, from pleated midi skirts to short and sweet playsuits.

Not for the lighthearted, the head-to-toe metallic outfits seen at the likes of Valentino and Alexander Mcqueen offer up a very futuristic vibe. Think gold jumpsuits and embroidered metallic maxis. If you’re looking to add just a touch of sparkle, try matching metallic heels with a statement little black dress.

Viva La Velvet

The season’s key fabric? That would be velvet. Topshop Unique got this just right with inky black and full length pieces, as well as printed shorter shift dresses. Wear it crushed, coloured or patterned, anything goes as long as you don’t ruin your new velvet heels in the rain!

Predatory Prints

The fiercest of trends has been let loose once again. Calvin Klein and Dior brought us abstract takes on the animal print including leopard print rendered in pop colour, while Louis Vuitton featured leopard print accessories.

Rock the Ruffle

Here to stay for AW16, ruffles have come a long way since the ill-fitted 80s prom dress. This year’s runway presented them in all different shapes and sizes, including ruffled collar shirts from Gucci and Victorian vibe ruffled dresses from Simone Rocha.

Best of British

Taking traditional British style to a whole new level, some of Britain’s biggest brands, such as Burberry and Mulberry, revamped iconic looks for the new season. From military-inspired coats and jackets, to masculine tailoring and stylish kilt skirts, almost everybody was backing Britain on the catwalk.

On the high street you’ll find chunky scarves, patent lace-up boots built to stand the worst of the British weather, and long winter coats with a nod to military style in the form of brass buttons or bronze medal style broaches. After various reincarnations over the decades, duffle coats are back with a bang too- choose bright, block colour such as orange or red to lift your mood on a rainy day.
