Our Guide To Denim

Apple Shaped

Apple Shaped

Those who are apple-shaped are typically top heavy, have narrow hips and thighs, and skinny legs. These body types should stick to regular or high rise jeans in order to avoid a "muffin top"; the appearance of a bulging midsection. Pockets can be an "apple's" best-friend when it comes to denim, since they provide the perfect disguise for any tummy issues they may have in the front and add definition to the booty in the back.

  • Cut: Boot cut, Straight
  • Rise: Regular, High
  • Wash: Dark, Grey, Black
  • Pockets: Front & Back, 5-pocket

Pear Shaped

Pear Shaped

The pear-shaped woman tends to carry her weight in the lower area of her body. These women tend to have a small to medium bust and a well-defined waist, while areas such as the hips, thighs, calves and bottom are relatively larger. Low-rise jeans that fit properly will make this body type's torso appear longer.

  • Cut: Slight Boot cut, Straight, Cigarette
  • Rise: Low
  • Wash: Dark, Clean Wash

Boyish Figures

Boyish Figures

In order to create a curvier look, boyish figures should refrain from wearing baggier styles that hide the shape and opt for a tapered leg jean that sits on the waist. Fortunately for these gals, this body type is a perfect match for the "skinny" jean, however if they forgo that option, tapered denim styles and flared leg jeans create volume and curve for women seeking a more shapely appearance. You can also try jeans that are “whiskered” on the outer thighs, to provide a curvier appearance.

  • Cut: Flare, Skinny
  • Rise: Low, Super Low
  • Details & Trends: Whiskering, Zipper Details

Curvier / hourglass

Curvier / hourglass

The curvier / hourglass woman should purchase her denim with a hint of stretch. Ideally she should look for 2% stretch in a pair of denim trousers, boot cut denim or flared jeans. Stretch denim places jeans just above the hips. Flared and boot cut styles help put curves in proportion with the rest of the body. Mid-rise jeans look best on women with average to longer legs while low-risers are better for those with a short waist.

  • Cut: Boot cut, Flare
  • Rise: Low, Mid
  • Pockets: Front & Back, 5-pocket
  • Wash: Dark

Inverted triangular

Inverted triangular

Inverted triangular body types should choose boot cut or flared leg jeans in order to promote a long, lean look. Avoid tapered and straight-legged jeans, which aren't flattering on this body type. Women in this category want styles that enhance their backside without giving off any appearance of sagging. Unusually svelte figures should choose jeans with side pockets to give the illusion of a fuller thigh area. Jeans with back yokes will also add much needed fullness to the backside. Low-rise jeans with contoured waists look wonderful on women in this category. Embellishments and fancy washes are also perfect for this body type. Lighter wash colors and jeans that fade along the legs add shape to the thighs while darker washes will make hips look smaller.

  • Cut: Boot Cut, Flared
  • Rise: Low
  • Wash: Light, Detailed
